Artists Conversations: Richard DeDomenici and Boedi Widjaja

UK artist Richard DeDomenici will walk you through the societal and urban changes that inspired his funeral cortege piece: ‘The Death of Social Housing’.

Artist statement: ‘My artist studio of eight years is located in Aldgate East – south of trendy Shoreditch and east of The City, and as such undergoing gentrification from two simultaneous fronts. I’ve watched as the large block of social housing opposite has been emptied of its residents and converted into luxury apartments, many of which will be sold to overseas investors and remain empty. As an artist I am both culpable – Artists moving into run-down spaces are often a predicator to gentrification – and vulnerable – in the next few weeks I will need to move out of my studio as the building owners have sold to developers. This is a story that is repeated across London, and one I propose to explore in this project.’

Indonesia-born, Singapore-based artist Boedi Widjaja brings to London new performance ‘Path 7, New Ground’, seventh in his series of works exploring notions of place, origin and identity.

Boedi will explore movement in locales–densely sedimented with migration, settlement and belonging–tied to a sack of lump chalk and the floating force of a giant balloon. Art interventions will take place in Tower Hamlets, a neighbourhood that has experienced successive waves of immigration beginning with the Flemings in the 14th century to the South Asians in the mid 20th, and within the City of London, the heart of London’s trade and commerce since the Middle Ages.
