Santiago Sierra In Conversation with Hans Ulrich Obrist

Lisson Gallery is proud to present a programme of free lunchtime talks which offer a unique opportunity to hear artists, cultural figures and our curatorial team discuss art and its broader content.

Each talk gives the opportunity to discover first-hand the thoughts, processes and insights behind the artists work. Each lecture is free but booking is essential as there are a limited number of places available.

The thirteenth talk in the series will be a conversation between Santiago Sierra and Hans Ulrich Obrist about works in Santiago Sierra’s solo exhibition at Lisson Gallery.

Santiago Sierra was born in Madrid in 1966, where he currently lives. He studied visual arts in Mexico City, Madrid and Hamburg. Since the mid-nineties, Sierra has realized a large number of projects, that critically address repression and exploitation through the medium of contemporary art. Some of his most remarkable projects originate from collaborations with institutions such as Magasin3 Stockholm Konsthall (2009), Kestnergesellschaft Hannover (2005) and Kunsthaus Bregenz (2004).

In his exhibition at Lisson Gallery, Sierra will present a major retrospective of his video works. The exhibition consists of three screening rooms, some with several screens and others with a single programmed screen playing a schedule of different films. The 52 videos presented fall into three distinct groups: looped videos documenting continuous performances, documentation of performances with a defined start and end, and video documents of sculptural projects.

Hans Ulrich Obrist is a distinguished contemporary art curator, critic and art historian. He is the Co-director of Exhibitions at the Serpentine Gallery. A prolific documentarian, Obrist has recorded almost 2000 hours of interviews with numerous cultural figures including Ai Weiwei, Zaha Hadid and John Baldessari. Obrist’s interview with Rashid Rana will be included in the artist’s forthcoming Cornerhouse/Lisson Gallery publication.
