All that Fits: The Aesthetics of Journalism

All that Fits: The Aesthetics of Journalism presents the provocative idea that art and journalism are two sides of a unique activity; the production and distribution of images and information. The exhibition brings to surface how images and information are communicated, and the aesthetic principles used in the act of transmission. Whereas journalism provides a view on the world, as it ‘really’ is; art often presents a view on the view, truth posited as acts of reflection. All that Fits: The Aesthetics of Journalism will examine both as systems of information that define truth in terms of the visible but also what can be imagined.

The exhibition will be presented in three chapters: The Speaker, The Image and The Militant. These three separate displays of artwork respond to the overall theme and each include new artworks. ‘The Speaker’ runs from Sat 28 May – Sun 19 Jun, ‘The Image’ runs from Wed 22 Jun – Sun 10 Jul and ‘The Militant’ runs from Wed 13 – Sun 31 Jul 2011.

All that Fits: The Aesthetics of Journalism is curated by Alfredo Cramerotti and Simon Sheikh. Artists include, among others: Sammy Baloji, Yael Bartana, Eric Baudelaire, Renzo Martens, Katya Sander, Hito Steyerl and Walid Raad/The Atlas Group. In conjunction with the main exhibition, NEWS! New Event World Spectacular will be on display in the QUAD Corridors and Digital Screens. Lauren Mele and Hannah Conroy have been commissioned to investigate ties between contemporary art and journalism and its increasingly progressive relationship. Loosely based on Fay Nicholson’s blog, ‘An ABC of Aesthetic Journalism’, NEWS! New Event World Spectacular attempts to portray a comprehensive array of interpretations of the aesthetics of journalism; and to serve as a platform for further thought and discussion beyond the gallery walls. NEWS! New Event World Spectacular will also be on display from Sat 28 May - Sun 31 Jul 2011.

Two exhibition events will contextualise the exhibition. On Wed 8 Jun 2011 there will be a Q&A session with The Derby Telegraph picture editor Victoria Wilcox entitled ‘You own the news’. The session will look at how a newspaper is created and what people can do to get involved and be part of the news process. The Derby Telegraph Q&A session takes place in QUAD from 6-8pm. On Wed 22 Jun 2011 Dr. Anthony Downey, Programme Director of the Contemporary Art Programme at Sotheby's Institute London and Editor of www.ibraaz.org, will discuss the aesthetics of media representation in the current climate. The talk takes place from 6-8pm. Tickets for each talk are £3 and can be booked through QUAD Box office on: 01332 290606.
