Join us for a day of experimental live performance taking place across the University campus. The work takes the notion of the performance lecture, utilising some of the spaces or tools of a lecture, but expanding it into a highly theatrical and visual event. This is Not a Performance or a Lecture! is a programme which blurs fact with fiction, instruction with the dramatic, as artists test and dissect our understanding of what might constitute a performance lecture. The afternoon will include seven new commissions, taking place in lecture theatres, sports halls and performance spaces that respond to the unique and complex challenges the performance lecture format presents, purposefully meandering from performance to lecture and back again.

This will be accompanied by an afternoon symposium on Fri 17 Jun 2011 that will explore and debate the porous lines of affinity and bias that connect and separate what are loosely termed visual arts and performing arts. The symposium will bring together artists and curators, who are employing techniques across shifting disciplinary lines, into conversation with academics and a journalist who are critically exploring this area, in a lively dialogue, discussing how flexible practices benefit artistic inquiry, challenge institutional approaches and develop spaces for rapport between often segregated worlds.
