Artur Zmijewski

Cornerhouse presents the first major UK survey exhibition of Polish artist Artur Zmijewski from 13 November 2009 – 10 January 2010.

Zmijewski’s work is controversial, at times disturbing, and often rooted in a Polish vernacular surrounding politics, identity and conflicted histories. Emerging in the late nineties from the legendary Warsaw studio of Grzegorz Kowalski, Zmijewski adopts the unusual methods designed by Kowalski for an art school environment, utilising them in highly tense real world situations with alarming – and sometimes explosive - results.

This UK survey show is an opportunity to experience Zmijewski’s compelling films, featuring a selection of work made by the Polish artist between 2003 and 2009, beginning with key works Pilgrimage and Our Songbook (both 2003), and ending with his latest video works Two Monuments and Democracies (both 2009). In addition to the gallery show, there will be a screening of Zmijewski’s earlier works in our cinemas in January.

At once aggressive, yet sensitive and compassionate, Zmijewski’s film and video works challenge our sense of what should be made visible and what should remain invisible.

A major new commission by Artur Zmijewski will launch in 2010 at A Foundation, Liverpool.

Produced by Cornerhouse.
Curated by The Salford Restoration Office.

This exhibition is part of POLSKA! YEAR in the UK 2009-2010.
