Designs on a Utopia

Gallery Primo Alonso is delighted to present Designs on a Utopia, a new body of work by Richard Cramp which transforms the gallery space into an interactive experience evoking a sense of play, adventure, intrigue and excitement through the use of scale and suggested narrative. The sculpture can be viewed from different perspectives through the act of crawling and climbing. Hoping to re-address everyday architectural features in a new light, Richard questions what they stand for and the narrative possibilities that lie within their use.

Looking at materials, process and structure Richard build sculptures and installations that evoke the viewer to consider narrative, space and perception of the recognisable features. Through the way materials are used, the interactive elements of the work and the use of illusions, the viewer is invited to consider what they see as well as projecting their imagination onto the possibilities of what lies beyond. The use of the miniature is also a way of making the viewer consider what they are looking at in relation to themselves. All of these points are enhanced by the reaction to the environment in which the piece exists and allows the space and sculpture to blend and form a symbiotic relationship.

These newest works echo the architecture that exists within our world alongside that of science fiction actualising their endless possibilities within reality. What is experienced on this journey can be read as ideas on a Utopian existence or perhaps a more cynical view of what mankind might ‘progress’ too. These works are informed by an array of architectural and artistic influences. Spanning different cultures, time periods and realities, these include modernism, Bauhaus furniture and building design, historical and contemporary architecture, first hand experience of travelling and Science fiction. These ideas come together to form ambiguous representations of spaces. Each representation sets up its own believability from the visual rules we have learnt to accept in the every day perception of our surroundings.
