RECEPTION

For one night only – RECEPTION, the first in a series of theatrically curated events which take a dynamic and multi-disciplinary approach to a single topic, featuring elements of lecture, performance, sound and film, and all that falls between.

We call on interested parties to congregate on the above date, to witness a diverse series of demonstrations – our stated intent being to capture messages from the ETHER, to channel the intangible, the inexplicable and the other-worldly and give form to their signals, always conscious that we are looked to for a due performance of our task. The only assurance which we can offer of our earnestness and zeal is in presenting to you such fragmentary demonstrations as will comprise the coming evening, whereby we trust that successive steps in our progress may be marked.

–– Thus, a diverse assembly of practitioners – artists, scientists, musicians, writers, performers and other investigators - will assemble to bring together the aural, visual and experiential, the factual and the mystical as they explore the secrets of the VOID ––

A list of those present for RECEPTION is appended for informative purposes:

Those present at our séance:
Mr. Iain Morrison and Mdm. Leiza McLeod (who channel the spirits of the largely forgotten Beat Girls. Their haunting musical renditions of these women poets’ works bring these long-quiet voices, whose history was repressed by their male peers, back to life in a beautiful and uncanny form)
Dr. Christine Mohr and Mdm. Sara Simblett, University of Bristol’s Experimental Psychology Department (who will present their research on magical beliefs and the brain, exploring the links between creativity and supernatural belief in associative thinking)
Mdm. Jantine Wijnja, Dutch artist (who will unveil Wild Metaphysics, a multi-faceted investigation into the social history of the paranormal in the Netherlands which draws on the minutes from the now-defunct Dutch Association for Parapsychological Research)
Dr. Duncan Speakman, sonic alchemist.

Many more to be confirmed - Also on the evening: New Orleans funeral dirge, moving pictures, an investigation into allegations of devilish gramophone messages, black-magick, spiritualist ‘tricks’ and OTHER MANIFESTATIONS. Refreshments will be served.

[With apologies to the Seybert Commission, charged with investigating spiritual manifestations, University of Pennsylvania, 1883 – 87]

*RECEPTION is produced by Bristol-based artists and programmers, Al Cameron, Ali Jones and Anna Searle, with support from Plan 9 and Spike Island Associates.
