derive

derive - to flow; to have origin; to descend; to proceed; to be deduced

derive is a monthly gathering for artists who value research as a crucial part of the continuous development of their practice.

derive aims to crystallise and make visible, the forces which drive and coerce the production and distribution of art, by building up a critical dialogue through regular presentations of a diverse series of interests.

Now in the fourth month from inception, derive is bounding forward both in form and the range of content we look to in order to maintain a critical dialogue. Going from an intensive open discussion on artists interventions into the market economy, to quick fire presentation format peachy coochy. Each time addressing a different set of subjectivities, whilst maintaining a concern over the dissemination of art and writing on practice and theory.

The next derive will take place in Islington Mill Sun 14 Jun 2009, at 2pm, please email mail@toflowtobededuced to book a place.

What is it?
- A monthly gathering for artists who see research as a crucial part of the continuous development of their practice.
- An opportunity to work up an area of interest that may not currently be supported by what comes to hand, and present to a like minded group, with a view to creating the support needed.
- A space to share and engage in critical discussion.

What are the aims?
- To recognise the choice to be based in the North West in order to see what can happen from this position.
- To crystallise and make visible, the forces which drive and coerce the production and distribution of art, by building up a critical dialogue through regular presentations of a diverse series of interests.
- To find ways of measuring development and/or success, through articulating a self-awareness of operating outside of an academic structure.
