Oliver Walker - Mr Democracy

The UK is one of only three countries in the world not to have a written constitution. In an ambitious international project exploring trade, democracy and globalisation, artist Oliver Walker set out to create a constitution for the UK, outsourcing content and production to China, the world’s fastest growing economy. Developed in Shanghai at the East China University of Politics and Law, the constitution offers an insight into the notion of democracy that the West are so keen to export, exploring issues such as human rights, citizenship and nationality from an alternative perspective.

1000 plastic toys were mass-produced in three factories across China, specially manufactured to recite the new constitution when pressed. A live tracking device at The Royal Standard in Liverpool has monitored the route of the toys as they were shipped across the globe, highlighting the global trade route so integral to our relationship to China. The “New Constitutions” are set to arrive imminently and to be unveiled at a welcoming ceremony on the evening of Thursday 30th October, as part of the Long Night of the Biennial city-wide events.

A programme of talks and events will conclude the exhibition, exploring issues raised by the project, such as the role a written constitution could play in the UK, and China's changing role in the world.
