Islington Mill Art Academy

Islington Mill Art Academy will be opening its doors to new members on Thu 10 Sep 2009 with an open day at Islington Mill, Salford from 2 - 8pm.

The Academy was started in 2007 by a group of art foundation students keen on exploring alternatives to University based education for artists. The Academy exists to experiment with what an education in art can be, where it can take place and how it can be paid for.

If you have a tremendous and unstoppable will to make art and you would like to direct and organise your own education, please come along Thu 10 Sep to find out more! If you canít make it along to the open day, please get in touch with us at: artacademy@islingtonmill.com

More on Islington Mill Art Academy:
Islington Mill Art Academy is Mike, Amy, Maria, Maurice and Mike. Current interests and activity across the group include distance drawing projects, video work, open source software, group portraiture, relational and social history projects amongst other things.

We work closely with artists both near and far. In the Spring of this year, we worked with Paris based artist Chloe Briggs on a drawing project sent via the postal network as an instructional poster each week for a period of six weeks. We expanded the project through inviting groups based in Marseille, Glasgow and Berlin to follow the instructions simultaneously with us. At the conclusion of the six weeks, the groups met in Berlin to talk about the work.

Currently, the Academy are working with artist/curator Helen Kaplinsky on a research based project which aims to reconsider the uses and usefulness of the gallery space at Islington Mill. The project has seen the Academy meet with many professionals working within the creative industries. It has been an opportunity to explore the relationship between artists and the art market and a chance to consider what it might mean to be an artist working within this circle.

Since itís inception in 2007, Islington Mill Art Academy has undertaken residencies in the Lake District, Berlin and Glasgow, written for Frieze and Art Monthly and worked with galleries such as Transmission in Glasgow, The Arnolfini in Bristol and the ICA in London.
