Gary Stevens - Performance Lab. 2008 - 2009

This year’s Performance Lab takes a new shape and offers 14 artists the opportunity to be part of an intensive programme spread over 4 long weekends, led by the artist Gary Stevens and held at Toynbee Studios.

The Performance Lab gives artists a chance to explore the processes of making and developing performance-based work. Participants are encouraged to take risks in their practice, discover material individually or collaboratively, and view and discuss work in a supportive and critical environment. The sessions are conducted in a casual atmosphere, but the aim is to engender serious, critically rigorous and vital work of different kinds.

“Gary is a master at creating an atmosphere where people – performers or not – can feel at ease to present work” Participant in 2007 Lab

Each day (11am – 6pm) will consist of a practical session led by Gary Stevens followed by shared studio time for the whole group to develop ideas further. An integral part to each weekend is an illustrated talk by a guest artist in conversation with Gary Stevens, followed by Q & A.
The guest speakers this year are:
Jem Finer, Helen Paris & Leslie Hill, Lee Campbell & Frog Morris

In the final weekend there will be an opportunity to present work to an invited audience.
